Personal Narrative: A Trip To Mexico

I was filled with fear and anxiety as I looked at the large Mexican guards carrying huge guns, looking like they just came from combat. In my mind I replayed the comments from people back home about Mexico’s culture, gangs openly walking the streets ready to cause trouble or drug deals taking place on every corner. They would ask why I wanted to go to such a dangerous place. I had started to question myself then, “What am I getting myself into?” We piled into a charter bus and headed south from the U.S. border. Through the tinted windows, our group started to watch a completely unfamiliar world appear as we traveled deeper into Mexico. We saw run-down shacks that were probably smaller than my bathroom where entire families lived. There were a large number of police cars, men with guns running through the streets and homeless people sitting on the sidewalks with all their belongings beside them. We decided that we needed to go canvas the neighborhood to bring in children for VBS. The houses around the church were plain but still looked livable. The children and teens of the church would walk around the neighborhood with us. A petite little girl named Ashley was walking with me as we looked for children to invite. While walking, we saw a lot of stray dogs and Ashley tried to tell me about them. I couldn’t understand everything she said, two years in Spanish class did not prepare me for this simple conversation. Another concern popped into my head, how am I going to communicate with these people without hunting down the translator every five seconds? The concern for the lack of ability to communicate lessened after a couple of days at our site. I learned how to talk to the children in the little Spanish that I knew and we used hand motions to make up for the lack of
