Katniss is the provider, the survivor, the girl on fire. Peeta is the hope, the class, the identity. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark make up the main characters in The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is a story about a post-apocalyptic country called Panem. Panem was divided when a rebellion and war broke lose. Divided into 12 districts that were once whole, Panem is under the ultimate power of the capital. Every year these 12 districts participate in the annual Hunger Games. During these games, two tributes from each district – a boy and a girl – fight one another to the death in an all-natural outdoor arena. However, they not only fight themselves, they must fight the elements to stay alive. Katniss and Peeta are both from district 12, the poorest of the districts. The hunger games, televised live on TV similar to a reality TV show, is entertainment for the citizens of the capital and a reminder to the districts that the capital has absolute power. When comparing Katniss and Peeta, several differences arise, such as Katniss is a survivor while Peeta is soft hearted, but also many similarities including their protectiveness, their being symbols of hope and their resolve to keep their identities.

Peeta proves to be more level headed and calm. Peeta chooses not to be a pawn in the games; he does not want to let the capital choose how or if he dies. He chooses to remain himself and he says he wants to “die as himself.” For Peeta, it is important that the capital knows they do not own him.
