My reasons for being interested in serving the Peace Corps is that I enjoy helping others, serving in the Peace Corps will broaden my skills and understanding of others, and will teach me to be make a difference effectively. I plan to overcome the various challenges associated with Peace Corps service through adaptability, time management skills, and remembering why I am serving. One of many reasons for wanting to serve in the Peace Corps is that I enjoy helping others. Making a positive impact on others through empowerment is something that I want to make a career out of. I am currently an AmeriCorps volunteer at the Iowa Department of Human Rights. My position at the DHR includes being not only coordinating my own youth program but I get to work with other programs in the department that advocate for underrepresented Iowans and foster hope within our communities by educating individuals, businesses and government entities about the needs, rights and responsibilities of all Iowans. Another reason for joining the Peace Corps is that I want to broaden my knowledge and understanding of others. I take pleasure in learning about other cultures that could be different ethnic, racial, attitudes, or beliefs I have not been accustomed to yet. I have learned this skill through balancing 15 school credit hours with working 20 hours a week and 30 hours a week of the responsibilities of being captain of the University of Iowa Track and Field team.
