Patient Satisfaction: A Case Study Summary

Measures reported by Lane Regional Medical Center (LRMC) nursing staff that are being used to address general patient satisfaction include the following: responding to call lights in a timely fashion; monitoring and providing better pain control; providing blankets and pillows as requested; rounding frequently to monitor patient status; and staying up to date on patient condition. In reviewing literature that addresses patient surveys and HCAHPS ratings, there are various theories and thoughts about what can be done to improve patient satisfaction and therefore HCAHPS scores. Some suggest that the focus should be on specific HCAHPS domains, such as those related to noise and communication to improve patient satisfaction (Lynch, 2015). There is a feeling that every health care member should contribute to a culture of safety and respect for the patient (Lynch, 2015). Program focus would continue toward physician and nurse communication, a responsiveness of staff to patient needs, and provision of a safe and clean hospital environment (Lynch, 2015). The purpose of this case study is to use computer-based visualization tools instead of standard education practices (Natale & Gross, 2013). The computer tools inform the patient about preparation for procedures; what to expect during surgical stays; issues related to pain management; patient safety as well as discharge and post-op follow-up information (Natale & Gross, 2013). The HCAHPS scores revealed improved patient perception of care for those who received the computer-based visualization tools instead of standard education practices (Natale & Gross, 2013).
