“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”-Christopher Reeve In life there are many obstacles one goes through in life and it makes you who you are. Having obstacles in your life can either bring you down or make you stronger and better as a person. Growing as a person is a part of life and sometimes someone can grow in a positive or negative way. Growth comes in at different times in our lives and often occurs when u come against obstacles that are meant to hold you back but you persist. In Dylan Thomas’ Extraordinary Little Cough the main character George “Little Cough” Hooper grew up as an individual during his trip with friends because he overcame obstacles.
Little…show more content… The two people that Little Cough and his friends don’t like are Brazell and Skully. Brazell and Skully are no friends to Little Cough and his friends. They bully Little Cough and are horrible boys. “They were the worst boy and biggest boys in school. Every day for term they caught me before class began and wedged me in waste- paper basket and then put the basket on the master’s desk” (Thomas 168). Throughout the whole trip that Brazell and Skully crashed they picked on Little Cough by teasing him and calling him names that aren’t true. “Look at Little Cough said, Brazell. Isn’t he extraordinary? He’s growing out of the sand. Little Cough hasn’t got any legs. Poor Little Cough, said Skully, he’s the most extraordinary boy in the world” (Thomas 169). They are bullying Little Cough thinking it will ruin his trip. He is trying his best to stand up for himself and let them know he isn’t what they say he is. Brazell and Skully are horrible kids who aren’t even welcomed to hang out with them. Little Cough has a good group of friends around him who stand up for him and who supports him although they sometimes tease him as well “Leave him alone, said Dan” (Thomas 169). He not only gets teased by Skully and Brazell but by his friends as well and he doesn’t seem to have a problem with it when his friends do it because they are his friends but Brazell and Skully aren’t and he doesn’t enjoy them making fun of him all the time or accusing him of things he cannot do. “He can’t swim. He can’t run. He can’t learn.” (Thomas 169).
All the teasing does is make George “Little Cough” stronger and more determined to prove to them and himself that he can do all the things they claim he cannot do. When someone constantly tries to bring you down and say you cannot do things it just makes you want to prove them and show that you’re capable of anything and everything even if you think less of that person. George isn’t afraid of Skully and Brazell because he often stands up to them and he even lets them know that he isn’t afraid of anyone. “I can swim and I can run and I can play cricket.
