This is one of my favorite quotes in this novel. This quote expresses the feeling of lost of hope, and depression. This quote also implies the use of personification. The author utilizes an image of a tree to describe the humans’ attributes and emotions of Oskar. In addition, this quote also integrates symbolism. It symbolizes the river as the world, and the tree as Oskar. His hopelessness is represented as the leaves that fall into the river, which is swept away into a dark empty place; where you can never find it again. Overall, Oskar is trying to have the courage in order to face the real world. Nonetheless, Oskar is afraid of the real world, because it brings and triggers the memory of his father death.
