Samantha Fajardo Mr. Powell English III HP 4 September 2015 “The Swimmer” In everyday life one comes upon various obstacles just by getting up in the morning to brush their teeth. For instance, you can wake up in the morning and not have any tooth paste to brush your teeth which becomes an obstacle for one. “The Swimmers”, a short story written by John Cheever is about one being affected by their surroundings. Environmental psychologist examine how people’s physical surroundings affect them and in this story a man “Neddy Merill” changes his reactions due to his surroundings that he comes across in the story. Levy’s house, on his way there he noticed that there was a storm upon him. He looks at the storm and starts to change the way he feels. “Why did he love storms, what was the meaning of his excitement when the door sprang open and the rain wind fled” (730). This quote explains how Neddy changed his reaction at the sight of the storm. Before the storm occurred he didn’t feel alone anymore. He felt excited because it was windy and raining due to the storm. This quote shows how Neddy’s surroundings affect his reactions. In relation to the storm the feeling of autumn changes Neddy’s feelings. “Since it was mid-summer the tree must be blighted, and yet he felt a peculiar sadness at this sight of autumn” (730). Neddy’s feelings change once again. Autumn made him feel sad and this quote above shows how his surroundings affect the way he feels. After the storm had pass and he had made other trips he had come across the Welcher’s pool. “… To the Welchers where he found their pool was dry” (430). In the citation above it explains how in the Welchers’ house everything was abandoned and put away. By the looks of the pool it gave Neddy the idea that his friends must have left. Seeing their things put away and their pool alone and dry made Neddy feel
