Portrait of Ram Mohammad Thomas Slumdog Millionaire is a novel about an 18- year-old Indian boy, Ram Mohammad Thomas, who attended the popular quiz show Who Will Win A Billion? Through every chapter a new story is told, and that’s how we got to know Ram. He tells his stories, and all of them have had something to do with each question asked on the quiz show. He didn´t have an education and he worked as a waiter, so everyone thought he would go home with nothing. However, Ram answered every question correct, and he won the top prize, one billion rupees. He barley had anyone he could call family, so it was very easy for him to just run away. Often, kids without family stick together, especially in a country like India, they take care of each other. However, Ram didn’t follow anyone, he didn’t go in the same circle as them and that made him different. His name was Ram Mohammad Thomas, he had tree names, and they all had different meanings and belongings. Ram came from Hinduism, Mohammad was Islamic, and Thomas was a Christian name. No one knew what religion he belonged to, and that turned out to be a quite positive thing. When he was little, there was a religious conflict between Hindus and Muslims, and because of his name, he escaped all that. He wasn’t looked upon a treat. But, I think that the fact that he didn’t have an affiliation to a specific religion or culture separated him from the people in his society. Everyone he had worked for was rich and had everything they needed, and even more, but Ram barely had anything. Salim was a Muslim, and Ram was not. He was not married away either. To me, it seems like Ram followed his own pat, off course he didn’t chose to have the life he had, but he could have done things differently and just live in one city the whole time, but he decided not
