Sometimes adults lie to children. They may lie to them because of their safety, because they’re too young, or maybe it’s because they’re afraid. In Number The Stars the lies and truth told will affect Annemarie’s growth from girlhood to womanhood, how brave she is, and her relationship with the adults in her life. When the story began, Annemarie Johansen was just a little girl. At the end of the story even though her age didn’t change, her character did. The lies and truth told in the story play a big role in this. The lies and truth told will affect Annemarie’s growth from girlhood to womanhood throughout the story. It affects her by making her feel as if she were not a child anymore. “Annemarie knew that Mama was lying again, and she could see that Mama understood that she knew. The lies and truth told also play a big role in affecting how brave she is. When Annemarie takes the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik, this shows how brave she is. The handkerchief was a tool to make the search dogs unable to sniff out the passengers on the boat. If the soldiers who stopped her knew about the handkerchief, there is no telling what they would have done to her. This was a true act of bravery.
