The word ‘Nigger’ is an ethnic slur used to describe people of Sub-Saharan Africa descent. The controversial use of the word comes from its racist use as a derogatory term to describe black slaves. In the society we live in today use of the word ‘Nigger’ has become popularised and commonly used in everyday speech as a term of endearment of sorts, depending on the context and the ethnic background you derive from. Should we still advocate the use of this word even if the connotations behind it have changed?
Musicians and public figures have made the use of the ‘N’ word normality. It’s most notably used in the music industry, particularly in rap music, which influences many to use it also. The underlining predicament is the millions of uneducated young people hearing this word and not having historic knowledge of the word ‘Nigger’ being used. People who are talking about committing criminal activity in their lyrics are referring to themselves as ‘Nigger’ furthering the racist stereotype. One famous rapper that goes by the name of ’50 cent’ uses the ‘n word’ many times in his music in an accepting context.
