They know that if they trust the justice system that chances are that because of corruption the criminals that are caught will be released without serving a punishment. The officers feel as though it is up to them to be police, jury, judge, and punisher, in order to keep their streets safe. Another key idea that Wahl brought up sparks a huge nature vs nurture debate. Wahl theorized that those who do the torturing are desensitized to it because they themselves were tortured. Can a person be taught to enjoy the screams of pain?
