Individual freedom and education are two of the most valuable virtues that humans have. Both individual freedom and education go hand in hand with each other. A perfect example of this is shown in the book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas, written by Douglas telling about his life as a slave and his escape into freedom him to be educated and becoming an abolitionist, and the essay “Purpose of Education”, written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an activist during the civil rights movement. All of these examples show how education and individual freedom go hand in hand with each other. This will always happen. Education can certainly make immense benefit for society and the betterment of humanity. Having education allows a person to have one’s own opinions and thoughts which is an essence of individual freedom. This can be achieved hrough education. In Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas he writes “After apologizing for his ignorance, and reminding the audience that slavery was a poor school for the human intellect and heart, he proceeded to narrate some of the facts in his own history as a slave, and in the course of his speech gave utterance to many noble thoughts and thrilling reflections.” He's giving a speech in front of a big audience without much experience. He wants to remind his audience not to judge him too hard. At the same time, though, when Douglass calls slavery a "poor school for the human intellect and heart," When Mr. Auld prevents Mrs. Auld from teaching Douglass how to read, he's disappointed that his education has been interrupted. Martin Luther King Jr. he express on education and freedom that comes with education. “The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically”, Thinking critically gives people a voice. “We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. The broad education will, therefore, transmit to one not only the accumulated knowledge of the race but also the accumulated experience of social living.” This whole paragraph cannot stress enough how education and individual freedom go hand in hand with each other.
