Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo And Juliet are two plays both written by William Shakespeare, performed and published around the same time. Much Ado About Nothing is a romantic comedy, and Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story between star crossed lovers. Despite being two different genres, the plays share the same qualities in terms of the sequence of events. The majority of Shakespeare's work features love as the main focus. Romeo and Juliet is a messy, reckless, teenage love. In contrast to that, Much Ado About Nothing has a more of age, and mature love. These two plays go about and flow in different ways. Much Ado About Nothing is not written in iambic pentameter, which would have been awkward in my opinion. These plays do have much in common, that being infamous balcony scene. This scene (in both plays) was very crucial and impactful to the way the next few scenes would be set up. Romeo sneaks in right as Juliet comes out onto the balcony and begins professing her love for him. Much Ado About Nothing on the other hand, was quite the opposite. Instead of the balcony scene bringing each other closer, this pushes Claudio and Hero further away from one another, hurting their love. After Claudio supposedly sees Hero cheating on him with another man on her balcony, he humiliates her at their wedding the following day. Also, these plays feature a friar as a side character. They both want to see love prevail, and in my opinion, happen to be the most sensible character. In Romeo and Juliet, the friar comes up with a plan to keep the lovers together. Unfortunately, bad timing gets in the way and Romeo and Juliet end up killing themselves. In Much Ado About Nothing, the friar also devises a plan.
