This man was a man of brilliance in his day, and his legacy lives on in his beautifully written, countless masterpieces that withstand the test of time. William Shakespeare is most well known for two things: drama and comedy. In several of his most famous plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, and Hamlet, universal themes such as love, deception, and manipulation are portrayed in a way that evokes imagination from its readers throughout generations. Though each of his works depicts a new and exciting storyline, there are many connections that can be made between common themes, plots, and characters. The antagonist of any story is essentially the person that opposes the protagonist, or causes all the problems. In Hamlet, Claudius first murders his own brother, King Hamlet, to steal the thrown and then marries his deceased brother’s widow. The ghost of Hamlet states, “Thus was I, sleeping, by a brother’s hand/ Of life, of crown, of queen at once dispatched” (A1, S5, 74-75). This means that in an instant, as King Hamlet lay sound asleep in the trusted company of his brother, Claudius took from him his crown, his queen, and ultimately, his life. After Hamlet, son of King Hamlet and nephew to Claudius, discovers from King Hamlet’s ghost that Claudius is to blame for the murder of his father, Hamlet seeks revenge. Consequently, Claudius becomes consumed with desire to kill Hamlet before word gets out that he has acted so malevolent in his evil plan to claim the thrown.
