Literary devices are used throughout the story “Mother Savage” by Maupassant to convey his message. The literary devices include foreshadowing, symbolism, and theme. Together these dominant elements enhance the story by making it much more interesting for its readers. Throughout the text they are interwoven together to provide a foundation and frame for the story. They are essential in developing Maupassant’s ideas into the thrilling story of an old woman who seeks deadly revenge upon the death of her son. Foreshadowing is when something happens in the story to hint at a future event. Foreshadowing is prevalent in this story. Foreshadowing is an important part of this story for a few varying reasons. There are a couple of examples for this.
