The Most Invulnerable Fortress Throughout the medieval period, strong fortresses were built to symbolize the strength and power of many rulers. A particular fortress that hold the same traits through history is the Tower of London. “To the hundreds of thousands who visit it each year, the Tower of London excites grisly visions of imprisonment, torture, and violent death” (Hibbert 20). Many event occurred in the fortress that became stories or myths to generations. Throughout the centuries it was used in many ways like imprisoning, housing, and storing. The ruler who helped expand and reconstruct the towers to it’s strongest and point goes by the name of William the Conqueror. He was first promised by the deceased king who had no sons for the throne, but William’s promise was later forgotten. Many battles took place before William finally surrounded the fortress with his Norman army and conquered the fortress that was at the time owned by the late king’s brother in law, Harold. The reconstructed fortress was surrounded by multiple towers and mostly made of great white stone that represented the Norman monarch. The designs took place in the 1070s and was completed in 1100 by Englishman of England. The Tower of London was massive and high and surrounded by Roman walls (“A building History”). The one and only opening entrance of the fortress was the drawbridge that was surrounded by ditches and water. Although The Tower of London was a fortress, it acted as if it was a castle. As the years passed, the king lost the possession of the fortress to the court (Hibbert 49). The court then use the fortress as a tourism for the citizens. It was opened to visitors as an attraction in England. The tourism became very famous because of the residence that had once lived or dined there. Although it was not owned by the royal residence anymore, it still contained many precious items that once belong to them. The items that visitors were able to look at was the crowns, jewels, and other safe keepings of princesses, queens, princes, etc. Also, while visitors are examining the spectacular items in the fortress, history of past events that occurred in the fortress were informed to the visitors by the tourism guide. The attraction offered many types of tour within the fortress. For example, visitors are able to tour any of the tower in the fortress. One of the famous tower that visitors were always intrigue by was the White Tower. It was one of the tower that William the Conqueror had built during his time. This attraction later on became very popular throughout Europe. As the attraction of the historic place grew, many people begin to understand the stories behind the fortress
