20 Feet from Stardom is an Oscar winning American documentary film directed by documentary Morgan Neville. Behind every superstar and their hit single there are a number of backup singers who make the superstar shine brighter which often leads to, the stars outshining the backup singers completely. This documentary focuses on these backup singers. Heaps of people have heard their voices and know their voices but no one knows the names of these singers. Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the voices behind some of the greatest musical legends.
The personal life story of these unique artists who have spent their lives in the shadows of superstardom and their sacrifices and rewards while doing so has been showcased. The artists are all from different genres and periods of popular music. Apart from their talent, their race, background and their diverse path through their career has also been shown. The movie also has intimate interviews with big celebrities like Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting to name a few. But for once in this movie these world-famous figures are not on attention and instead the backup singers and their stories take center stage in the documentary. I loved it but I wish there was some footage on singers who did not make it at all. I think it would be interesting to here from them as well. I liked the stories of the backing singers, and it was great to recognize and appreciate their individual talent. The documentary focused on three artists Darlene Love, Merry Clayton and Lisa Fischer all three of them being extremely talented individuals with amazing dedication.
