"Congress shall make no law [...] abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press [...]." (www.law.cornell.edu/) The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech to every single American citizen, and it makes it illegal to make laws going against it. There are laws that are unconstitutional and go against the First Amendment called Food Disparagement laws, also known as Veggie Libel laws. They protect companies unconstitutionally by limiting the things citizens can say publicly. A few major companies seem to like the idea of Libel laws because they get free money every time someone says something that may be a little unfavorable to them. Monsanto is a widely controversial mega-corporation created by the late John Francis Queeny. The controversy is over Monsanto’s current methods and principles, as the company was originally created for mass food production but is now a crafty, word-twisting chemical supplier raking in more money than it knows what to do with. It and its ideals have been debated countless times, always with the positive sides outweighing the negative because Monsanto is not afraid to bend the truth a little bit. Monsanto uses Genetically Modified Organisms and harsh, toxic chemicals to grow large crops to feed many. This puts them up for debate among the different beliefs in America. People dislike Monsanto’s methods, but “For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction,” (Sir Isaac Newton) meaning that whatever someone does, people will have their own opinions. Libel laws take away the right for Americans to voice these opinions. However, some people agree with Monsanto's ways and ideas. There are some upsides to it, like the mass quantities of food produced that feed many for small amounts of money. If someone is granted permission to speak their mind anywhere at any time upon American citizenship, then, by law, no one is allowed to revoke that permission. Food Disparagement laws allow food manufacturers to sue a group or person who makes comments that could potentially harm profit for the company. Of the thirteen states that currently have these laws in place, Colorado seems to have the strictest regulations on food disparaging. Colorado's law, 35-31-101, states "It is unlawful for any [group or single person] to destroy or cause to be destroyed, or to permit to decay or to become unfit for use or consumption, [...] or knowingly to make any materially false statement, for the purpose of maintaining prices or establishing higher prices for the same, or for the purpose of limiting or diminishing the quantity thereof available for market [...]." If a person publicly states a fact about the things occurring at food factories, the consumers might change their opinions about the companies, resulting in a loss of money for the company.
