Reuben Lucius Goldberg, born July 4th, 1884, was a famous cartoonist and mining engineer. Using his artistic talent and engineering, he created designs called Rube Goldberg machines. The purpose of his designs was to produce an arduous machine to achieve simple tasks. Some designs were used for solving common household issues such as the "Simple Fly Swatter", "Moth Exterminator", and "Contraption Bed". "The Page Turner", a modern Rube Goldberg design created by artist Joseph Herscher, functioned as a machine that can turn a newspaper to the next page while it's being read.
