Mike Babcock has recently signed one of the largest coaching deals in the NHL during the off-season. Know as a cold technician who has only won games throughout his career, Mike Babcock is one of the most decorated hockey coaches of all time. He has won a Stanley Cup, 2 Olympic gold medals, a couple of World Championships and a CIS University Cup over his 24 years of coaching. Surely there is a formula to his success, however not even Babcock has cracked the “perfect coach” formula. As a matter of fact he believes there is no such thing as perfect team, and that is a major component of his philosophy. The result of his 415-198-91 record was due to his “preparedness”, but it was not an easy path to the NHL and all of the glory that came with his job. Babcock's philosophy started to develop when he travelled to England and graduated with a physical education degree. After his degree he took on the job as the Head Coach for Red Deer College and mounted a successful program, which lead him to eventually becoming the General Manager of the Moose Jaw Warriors. Babcock is very family orientated on and off the ice. He claims his favourite time of the day to be “family time” and has installed this ideal into the locker room. He is often quoted saying “the Red Wing family” as opposed to team because he believes the bond between the staff and players is strong enough to label as a family. I also enjoy how he treats his player, claiming he doesn't mind if they don't like him, as long as they show respect to the coaching staff. Finally the greatest concept he compains is being a “lifelong student” of the game.
