Melanoma is a cancerous disease that affects the skin, especially your melanocytes. This disease can be found in many parts of the body and the most common places include the face, arms, legs, and back. Other parts that are affected by this disease and less common include your palms, feet, mouth, and genital areas. The causes of melanoma are unknown but research has shown that the most common cause of this type of skin cancer is too much exposure to UV light. Although there are other factors that can trigger melanoma such as genetics. Symptoms that people can have with this disease include itching in the area affected by melanoma, bleeding or feeling discomfort in the area affected. Superficial spreading melanoma is usually diagnosed as stage zero because it does not go deep into the skin. Lentigo maligna is diagnosed as stage one because it has grown within the skin but the progressively growing slowly. Acral-lentiginous melanoma is consider stage two or three and the size is thicker and has spread to other parts of the body. Nodular melanoma is the deadliest of the four which spreads fast and damages other system in the body. This type of melanoma is considered stage four. This disease is diagnosed by using the ABCDE rule and can be helpful in determining what type of melanoma you may have. Also, the treatment for melanoma depends on how deep the melanoma is and the type of melanoma you may have. There are several treatments used to treat melanoma. For, instance a dermatologist may request that you have a biopsy taken of part of the melanoma or the whole melanoma. There are different types of surgical procedures performed and treatment that include chemotheruapy, radiation therapy, and for others it just depends on how severe the case may
