“A true friend is someone you can trust with all your friends.” Liesel's brother died right in front of her, but she was given the chance to live. Max's family were being taken away by the Nazis, but his life was spared by a helping friend. One example of why Max and Liesel are so valuable to each other is that they can talk about the terrible nightmares they both have. No one would understand how painful it feels to abandon the people you love to save your self, and how much guilt you feel, as your actions replay over and over again in your dreams.“Imagine smiling after a slap in the face. Then think of doing it twenty-four hours a day.” Since Max and Liesel have similar problems they are lucky to have found someone who can relate. As both Max and Liesel are people of few words, and their whole relationship is based on each other's similar personalities, and pasts.
