What defines masculinity? In Greek mythology, Hercules is a symbolic figure who represents masculinity through his strength, conquers, heroic actions. Men today feel the need to show their masculinity by their interaction with women, how they present themselves, and by their actions in general. This all roots back to history. In Cuchulainn’s Boyhood Deeds, Cuchulainn, a symbolic seven year old character in Irish literature is recognized for his strength and supernatural powers. When he is handed weapon, most of them do not survive because he is too strong for them. His own father Conchobar, offers his wife to him. Cuchulainn fights battles on his own and is demonic, outstanding, brave, and extraordinary. The thrill in his life is to seek adventure. To be a “man,” boys and men are supposed to be daring and fearless and have numerous amounts of women waiting at their feet. Men are supposed to be courageous and independent. Cuchulainn adheres all of these qualities. When men lack courage they are defined as week. In the Arab culture, families put emphasis on masculinity. Men are more respected when they help their families or take care of their households by being providers. Unfortunately, people misuse this term by having power over women. For instance, a man will become more aggressive and more physical towards anything weaker than him. Masculinity has changed and has now has different definitions. Women are sometimes called masculine based on their appearance or strength. This means that they have qualities traditionally associated with men.
