Mary Jones graduated from Central University at the top of her class. She was a superb student and exhibited extraordinary potential, which all of her professors observed. She was an active participant in several different activities outside of the classroom. She worked hard and positioned herself to land a job with a lucrative and prosperous firm, Universal Products, which came with a salary starting off at forty-thousand dollars a year and ample room for advancement. Mary demonstrated high self-efficacy and discipline and got rewarded for it. Beginning, Mary carried her strong values of achievement, concern for others and honesty with her when she began working at Universal products. To begin, she can alter inputs, then she can apply the theory of cognitive dissonance or completely change the comparison (Lunenberg & Ornstein, 2011). First, Mary can alter her inputs by simply decreasing the amount of effort and time she allocates for her work. Maybe she needs to enjoy life more and set a boundary between work and her free time. Here, addressing issues of working overtime is important because Mary feels obliged to take work home because it is too much for her to complete within her workday. Second, she can cognitively distort inputs or outcomes by attributing Sue with a higher level of qualifications, which resulted in Sue receiving a more gratifying salary. Honestly, this tactic in equity restoration would be difficult for most people. This is because, no one would say someone is better qualified than them after initially perceiving they were not. They would practically be lying to themselves in order to restore peace internally, which is not entirely realistic. Although, it is attainable, according to Lunenburg et al. (2011) and Schermerhorn et al. (2012). Lastly, Mary could simply modify the comparison. Instead of comparing herself to Sue, who graduated at the top one percent of her class, she could say, “Hey, at least I am doing better than Carl,” who is the firms mailroom attendant who just cannot quite get used to the new electric
