The word ‘maqsid’ (plural: maqasid) refers to a purpose, objective, principle, intent and goal and the word ‘Shari’ah’ means a branch of Islam which relates to the practical aspects of Islam. Therefore, Maqasid Al-Shariah defined as the objectives, purposes, principles from the Islamic law (Ashur, 2006). It could also be interpreted as the higher objectives of the law giver (Al-Raysuni, 2005). The Islamic Law is based on from the Holy Quran, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) which is the guideline from deep understanding and awareness towards all devotional acts. According to Imam al Ghazali, the objective of the Islamic Law is to promote the welfare of people which lies in the protection of their faith (deen), lives (nafs), intellect (aql), posterity (nasl) and wealth (mal). These five protections are essential for the establishment of welfare in this world as well as in the hereafter (Ibn Qayyim, n.d., p. 1; Kamali, 2008b, p.27). In Quran Allah S.W.T. constantly asks us to think and ponder about His creation. A true Muslim always preserves his moral behavior and mental faculties by avoiding alcohol and drugs which are haram in Islam because taking alcohol and drugs change or impair the intellect. With an impaired intellect and loss of control a human becomes an animal and lead people to commit immoral act. Furthermore, a good Muslim utilizes his intellect for benefit and not for any kind of evil or anything that might lead to destruction. For example, a Muslim never displays evil actions by using abusive words towards others in disagreement that may hurt them.
