This has become the era of profound technological advancements. Kids are growing up using the internet before they can talk and getting cell phones younger and younger. People are becoming more consumed with using their cell phones persistently. Most people use it aimlessly not seeing the harm in glancing at their phone in class or during church just to ‘check the time.’ Technology has changed the way people can connect with others. Someone can instantaneously contact somebody else who lives in another country in a different time zone, however, technology has also changed the way people disconnected from others. People stare down at their phones more than they look up at the people and world around them. Reading words on a pixelated screen is hardly the same as reading someone’s body language. Technology and social media allows people to interact without being face to face, which leads people to act differently or do and say things they would not say in person. People can hide behind screens and usernames to avoid the other individual’s reaction. Bullying, overtime and with the growth in technology, has become a more virtual attack. In Kelly’s video, the girl receives a text message that says, ‘No one will ever think you are beautiful’ and another telling her to kill herself. After reading the messages she decides to take a razor to her arm and later bleeds out on the street. This increase in online bullying has pushed more people to the idea of suicide. Bullies can be more aggressive with their attacks virtually because they do not have to look their victim in the eye. Bullies can detach themselves from the event. Kelly points out the fact that teen suicides make it on the news often, but people “would rather gossip about a famous person breaking the rules” (Kelly).
