A dream is a desire, goal, aspiration and motivation which turns into reality through determination. Dreams play a major role in everyone’s life, everyone has certain dreams in their life, from childhood to an adult. A Dream is a process of thought that we carry with us in every part of life and strive to achieve them. The play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry has its emphasis on the Younger family. Also followed by Langston Hughes poem, “Harlem (A Dream Deferred).” Mama (lean Younger), Beneatha, Ruth and Walter Younger, these four main characters have individual dreams. She plays the role of a typical house wife cooking, cleaning and ironing clothes. In the play she is pregnant with her second child but plans on dropping the child due to the condition and difficulties faced by the family. Ruth’s dreams could be described as “One could argue that Ruth is dried up [….]. Her hopes is gone, and she lives to live another day” (Matthews 568).She wants to live in a better house and wants the family to have a better future. She’s been supporting and helping her family to overcome problems. She has been working and cleaning houses in rich neighborhoods to earn money and to help her family financially. She does not seem very satisfied with her husband’s behavior and decisions but still looks forward to support him emotionally as well financially. In the play Ruth’s has shown the difficulties of a working women in the 90’s. Ruth works exceptionally hard to make her family condition better and happier. Her dreams are crushed when her husband Walter losses the money that he invested in a liquor shop. Ruth and the family had warned him to not trust his friends with the money. Mama and Ruth’s dreams are alike, where they want to unite the family. Ruth was all ready to move into the new house and get rid of the cockroaches and rat’s running at her old apartment.
