Through the development of Hinduism, Lord Vishnu became an important god over time. He is one of the supreme Hindu deities, along with Brahma and Shiva. Protecting creation and restoring order to the world are Vishnu’s major role and he is recognized by Hindus as the divine being from which all things come. Overall, he is the embodiment of mercy, virtuousness, and worldwide power that preserves the universe and upholds the cosmic order of Dharma. Vishnu appears in several Hindu scriptures, including the Rg Veda, Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, and the Puranas in the principal avatar forms of either Krishna, or Rama. The Bhakti movement, a historical progression based on the BhagavadGita and the Puranas, spread the dharma of Vishnu that profoundly influenced Modern Hinduism. The Rg Veda mentions Vishnu minimally. According to the Rg Veda, which is the most ancient sacred text in the Hindu tradition, Vishnu is a “Bull, who dwells upon the mountains” and who measures the universe with “his three strides” (Heehs 45). However, when Krishna appears to the gopis, they “all stood up in the same instant like the limbs of the body when the breath of life enters them” (214).
