What were the causes of the first world war? Four of the long term causes of WWI were Nationalism, Militarism, Imperialism, and Alliances. WWI happened between 1914 and 1918. Over 70,000,000 soldiers fought in WWI. 22,477,500 soldiers were killed and wounded. One of the causes of World War One was nationalism among the people of Europe. Nationalism was one of the long term causes of World War One. People in European countries wanted freedom from the states in which they lived. Italy and it’s people wanted to expand aggressively into Africa even though they were not considered a great power. Austro-Hungary became a dual-monarchy to oppress the nationalist movement. “Large areas of both Austria-Hungary and Serbia were home to differing nationalist groups, all of whom wanted freedom from the states in which they lived”(Causes of World War One 1). Serbia wanted to make a Serbian super power with the Serbians in Austria-Hungary and it led to Austria-Hungary becoming Serbia’s number one enemy. Italy wanted Trieste, Trentio, and Tyrol. Alliances were common among the great powers in Europe leading to and during World War One. The Triple Entente was an alliance between Britain, France, and Russia that was formed to counterbalance the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance was an alliance between Germany, Austria, and Italy that was made to support each other(the axis powers) during World War One. “They did not know whether their neighbors were enemies or friends. They did not really know which countries might help them or harm them. The climate was ready for war.” This created large amounts of distrust and suspicion among the great powers in Europe at the time. The alliances were made on a war-footing and boosted the war tension even more. Alliances forced the hand of the Germans and led to many international crises’.
