Danijela Baltic Mr. Stoner Lit and comp 9 per.2 Isolation One of the most awful states of mind one can be in is Loneliess. Lonliness is a common emotion, everyone feels now and then. It often affects people who isolated themselves from others. In the novel "of mice and men" Steinbeck chose important charecters to show the theme lonliness throughs such as, curlys wife, crooks and George. Crooks is isolated mainly due to his race, the story took place when racism was still an issue. He says "S'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy 'cause you was black." (80). In the story, Steinbeck shows that she probably wouldn't have died the way she had if it hadn't been for her lonliness. Since she was so lonely, she would seek attention from other men to keep her company. She says "If I catch any one man, and he's alone, I get along fine with him. But just let two of the guys get together an' you won't talk. Jus' nothing but mad. Youre all scared of each other, that's what. Ever' one of you'se scared the rest is goin' to get something on you" (85). After all of the men refused to talk with her, keeping in mind the reaction Curley has on this, she then goes to the one person on the ranch that she knows will most likely talk to her.
