Literary Devices in “The Most Dangerous Game” In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” the author Richard Connell uses literary devices to help convey the ideas of the story. The author’s use of the literary devices is very effective in developing the story. When the author uses these literary devices he creates suspense and paints a clearer picture in the reader’s mind. The author uses the similes and personification effectively in helping the story along by developing suspense by making the obstacles more challenging, and help the reader paint a clear image of certain things. The author’s use of similes is effective in developing an image in the reader's mind. For instance a quote that demonstrates the author's use of similes is “It’s like moist black velvet.” (60) This quote is comparing the darkness of the night to moist black velvet. The quote is a great simile that develops an image in the reader's mind because it helps the reader imagine how the night looks very dark and feels very wet. Also, another simile the author uses is found in the quote “...eyebrows and moustache were as black as the night.” (66) This quote is comparing the darkness of the night to the color of the general’s eyebrows and moustache.
