CASE STUDY – Britney Spears BACKGROUND Britney Spears was born on December 2, 1981, the middle child of three. She grew up in a middle class family in a small town in the US. As a child, she showed command of the stage with her singing and dancing. At eight years old, she was auditioning for a national television program; and by the age of 10, she was cast in the same show. In between, she gained entertainment experience as an understudy in an off-Broadway show. At the same time, she studied voice and dance with professionals. By the age of 12, Britney was back in her small town, in high school, which she hated after being in the spotlight. But by 14 years of age, she had her first recording contract. By 2004 her life seems to have unravelled. In January of that year, she married in Las Vegas; and then, 55 days later, she had the marriage annulled on the basis that she did not understand the consequences of her actions. By September she married again, and that marriage resulted in the birth of two children. In 2006, after the birth of her second child, she divorced their father. By 2007 her personal life had spun out of control. She repeatedly exhibited very erratic behaviour. For example, at one point she was caught driving her car with her young son on her lap. She had one hand on the wheel and the other around the child. After several DUIs, she entered rehab and was in and out of various facilities for a period of time. By October of that same year, she had lost physical custody of the children to their father. In 2008 she was hospitalized in the psychiatric ward at UCLA Medical Centre, following which her visitation rights to her children were suspended, because of her ongoing drug use.
