Taking a Stance People naturally classify other individuals. The problem is when does society cross the line from natural observation to judgment. As a binary society our culture drives people to think in a certain way and is unwilling to accept anything other than that; however, society is evolving into a multi-diverse culture where binary thinking is no longer always true. Even though people acknowledge genetic identities and recognize ethics more, people still face cultural boundaries. In both “Leave Your Name at the Border” by Manuel Munoz and “Covering” by Kenji Yoshino, it is important to understand the boundaries that arise between liberty and equality when humans are viewed differently as individuals and as a collective because covering…show more content…
Instead of guiding civilization, it often holds us back. Munoz illustrates this superbly when claiming, “You’re either Mexican, or you’re not” (308). This statement ties into the geographic notion that ‘American’ no longer means ‘white’ because America is not only white people; in particular, we are becoming a melting pot society where many different ethnicities are blending together where every individual wants one’s name pronounced correctly instead of “they”. Yoshino plays on the idea that an individuals authenticity is referred to as their True Self which gives a person the feeling of realism and creativity. The False Self protects the True Self until necessary and even exists hidden, balancing the True self and the world. Likewise, Yoshino mentions that “we must instead build a new civil rights paradigm on what draws us together rather than what drives us apart” (553). In some sense to remain amidst with our True Self. Currently, the law does not protect individuals from forms of covering, it only protects rights that are permanent such as skin color and born sexual orientation. The two quotes mentioned above cry for help to express ourselves without the demand for conformity which can be accomplished when we all engage as human beings to communicate one on one and stay honest to our true
