COST OF LAND SUBSIDENCE FOR LAND USERS Land subsidence in case study areas caused numerous direct and indirect damages that led to several costs (see Figure 5). According to the figure, in total, almost half of the land users suffer from the land subsidence both on the damage of the house and the flooding. Other costs of the land subsidence are the indirect cost on lowering of the groundwater and the health problem. Both in urban coastal and rural peatland, the damage to the house as well as flooding dominated the cost of the land subsidence. In total, the land users whose income was affected mostly have been experiencing land subsidence for more than twenty years (see Table 2). Carefully, in the group of the lost income of less than IDR 1 million per year the duration of the land users affected by land subsidence is mostly between 11 and 15 years, followed by more than twenty years. In another group, which is the lost income between IDR 1 million and IDR 2 million per year, the dominant duration of affected is more than twenty years. Even, for the group of lost income more than IDR 4 million per year, the dominant duration of affected is more than twenty years. Almost all of the land users (94.7 per cent) spent expenses to repair the houses and some of them spent money to rehabilitate the damaged plantation. Even though most of the land users spent adaptation cost on their houses, but the amount of expenses varies among them (see Table 3). The variation might be caused by the level of the damages, duration affected by the land subsidence, the capacity of the land users, or other factors. According to the table, almost one-third of total land users spent less than IDR 1 million per year for adaptation cost, and then another about one-third spent money between IDR 1 million and IDR 2 million per year.
