Throughout the majority of her life, Lana Del Rey dealt with being alone. She was always on the quieter side, and had to move around a lot. Lana Del Rey eventually found stability and her passion. Due to her singing career she met many of her now friends. Lana Del Rey is very familiar with loneliness, and that is shown through her songs “Ride” and “Summertime Sadness”. Lana Del Rey was born on June 21st, 1986 in New York City. She was born under the name Elizabeth Woolridge Grant. However she grew up in Lake Placid, New York. Aged 15, she was sent to a boarding school in Connecticut (“Lana” 1). The main reason for this was to deal with her alcoholism. At age 18 she studied metaphysics at Fordham University (“Lana” 1). Her constant loneliness was the root of her problems. “I drive fast, I am alone in midnight. Been tryin’ hard not to get into trouble, But I, I’ve got a war in my mind” (Lana Del Rey “Ride”). These lyrics tell how being alone had affected her. For anyone being alone for too long will cause them to go into some state of depression. Lana Del Rey didn’t just deal with not having anyone, but also losing the people she did have in her life. “Don’t leave me now. Don’t say good bye” (Lana Del Rey “Ride”). The time Lana Del Rey lost the most people in her life was when she was sent to boarding school at age 15. At this time she was also battling her alcohol addiction. The worse her addiction got the more people she lost, and the more people she lost the more she drank. Lana Del Rey has always thought of herself as a very misunderstood individual. She longed to find friends that were more like her, who understood her. “Every night I used to pray that I’d find my people” (Lana Del Rey “Ride”). These lyrics show just how much she wanted this.
