In the novel “Kite Runner” Amir and Hassan are best friends with plethora similarities, and differences. Amir, who is the main character of the story, can be often looked upon as a very bright young man, but also fragile to jealousy. With ease, he can become jealous. His father, a business man considered rich in the standards of the Afghanistan community, whom name is Baba. Being his father is exceedingly wealthy, he grows up with an easier childhood, and spoiled with more benefits compared to Hassan. Throughout the story, Amir and Hassan’s friendship is inconsistent. Amir will one day act as true of a friend towards Hassan, then the next day will attack Hassan out of jealousy when he witnesses his own father give Hassan affection. Amir personality restricts him to not being able to adapt to being assertive towards others.…show more content…
Amir states, “I was going to win, and I was going to run that last kite. Then I’d bring it home and show it to Baba. Show him once and for all that his son was worthy.” (Page 56). Amir’s drive for his father’s approval is the reason for his behavior in the beginning of the story, and the reason for having no reaction for Hassan getting raped. These plethora of elements lead a trail to his namby-pamby actions of sacrificing his best friend Hassan, his one and only vie for his father Baba’s love. Amir’s behavior does change from the beginning of the story… and on. As a spoiled child growing up, he could be defined as selfish, and egocentric. He changes for the better, becoming less self-centered after realizing his ego was restricting, and declining his happiness. “I thought about Hassan’s dream, the one about us swimming in the lake.
