In “Poem about My Rights, June Jordan shines a light on the horrible experiences, Black women faced while living in America. She specifically uses her life as an example to illustrate the pain of having to bare constant sexual abuse, racism and discrimination. For a long time, she felt as if everything about herself was wrong, because her own society never approved of her. But she later realized that no one can define who she is but herself. Hence why at the end of the poem, Jordan stated “I am not wrong: Wrong is not my name/my name is my own my own my own” (109-110).
