Formal Pope John Paull II born as of Karol Jozef Wojtyla on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland. In his early life His mother died when he was 9 years old, and his older brother Edmund died when he was 12. He made his First Holy Communion at age 9 and was confirmed at 18. Upon graduation from Marcin Wadowita high school in Wadowice, he enrolled in Cracow's Jagiellonian University in 1938 and in a school for drama. Later on the school was closed the next year by Nazi troops during the German occupation of Poland. Wanting to become a priest, John Paul began studying at a secret seminary run by the archbishop of Krakow. Once the school re-opened after the Second World War Karol finished his religious studies at a Krakow seminary he was ordained to priesthood on November 1, 1946.
