Aristotle a Greek philosopher believed that without changing its properties matter could be divided, Democritus disagreed, he believed that matter could only be divided when you get to the smallest particle which is an atom. In early 1800’s John Dalton disapproved Aristotle, John Dalton believed that matter was made of tiny particles, it cannot be divided into smaller pieces or destroyed (Atoms). In late 1800’s J.J . Thomson discovered the electron, he used a cathode ray tube (A high vacuum that produced luminous image on a fluorescent screen) with a magnet and discovered that the green beam the cathode ray tube produced was made of negatively charged material.
