Introduction
Considered to be one of the greatest influential evangelical North America, James Innell Packer is a Theologian that helps bridge the gap between the sovereignty of God with evangelism. The audience of Packer is expected to gain knowledge and answers of evangelism issues that Evangelicals were facing in the 1950’s. The book grew out of a series of messages he gave in in London at a pre-missions conference in 1959. Packer expanded these messages into this book in hope of giving a greater use of his teachings.
The goal of this book is to interpret how the sovereignty of God relates to evangelism. There are those that believe that if God is sovereign, He will save whoever he choses, unrelatedly of what actions we make. So therefor, why do anything? This understanding can put quite a damper in evangelizing and some might get discouraged that in order to believe this, they don’t sense the urgency for sharing the gospel with a non-believer.
Summary…show more content… Packer says “if you are a Christian, you pray; and the recognition of God’s sovereignty is the basis of your prayer.” (p. 15) We pray because we acknowledge our helplessness and dependence on God for which we cannot function without Him. Every time we pray, we confess our own impotence and God’s sovereignty. This is Packer’s first point and grounds on which he uses to demonstrate that all Christians agree on this matter and have nothing to argue about
