There is something to be said about a man who goes on national television and openly speaks about trying to coerce his wife into breastfeeding a fuzzy, baby primate (Watson, 2001, para 1). That man is Jack Hanna, a man whose achievements in his career are both extraordinary and remarkable. Most people know him from his multiple television series, but he is a zoologist and animal expert at heart who does not enjoy the fame generated by the media. Hanna’s ongoing experience with animals, starting from a young age, has allowed him to earn numerous awards and achievements from the media which has in turn had an international impact on wildlife and conservational awareness. His first achievements were received during his time at college. He graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree; he also received an Honorary Doctor of Public Service, and three Honorary Doctor of Science from other colleges. After college and throughout his life, Hanna appeared on his own series of television shows and has even authored several books. His books and shows received awards such as the R. Marlin Perkins Award for professional excellence, two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children’s Series, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Travel Program, a Silver Telly Award for Nature/Wildlife TV Programs, a National Wildlife Federation’s Animal Heroes Award, a Mom’s Choice Award for excellence in family-friendly media, and an Association of Zoos and Aquariums Award for outstanding service (Hanna, 2014b). He also earned an Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award for being an excellent zoo keeper for the Columbus Zoo (Lifetime Achievement Awards, 2014). He began being recognized in 1978 when he became director of the Columbus Zoo and turned it around from a failing zoo to the thriving zoo that it is today. The Zoo and Aquarium were in dire need to have the enclosures restructured because they were not appealing; not many people were coming to visit the facilities. Hanna started helping by raising funds needed to renovate and expand the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. He also formed informative and engaging events to tempt more people to attend the wildlife parks (Hanna, 2014a, para. 4). Today, Hanna is very busy with his wildlife travels and television shows but is still an active zoo leader at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium with the title of Director Emeritus since 1992 (Watson, 2001, para. 26). He hosts a number of animal television series such as “Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild”, “Jack Hanna’s Wild Countdown”, and “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures” which are designed to teach people about different animals and their natural habitats. Hanna has also published many books designed to educate individuals about animals and human cultures. Jack Hanna has spoken out in media appearances about the brutality and poaching of animals that have been taking place all around the world.
