Being deviant is not acceptable in society, however, that does not stop people to commit this act. Iago cleverly controls the thoughts and actions of his enemies to better his situation in the play, Othello by William Shakespeare. Even today, we see this type of personality in politicians that do the impossible to make you believe in them to gain your vote. In Othello, the antagonist, Iago, depicts this very effectively. Iago’s manipulative behaviour is undoubtedly shown through his deceitful schemes to ruin the lives of the people who get in his way. With that, makes it easier for Iago to betray him. For example, Iago encourages Cassio into drinking alcohol, causing him to forget that he gets drunk easily and he succeeds in reducing Cassio to a pathetic state where he is highly gullible do to his grieving with him. The quote, “O, they are our friends- but one cup, ill drink for you,” (II, III, line 37-38) basically illustrates the fact how Iago got Cassio to drink, involve the notion that because they are at their friend’s wedding celebration and they have to drink. As well, it states that a cup of liquor will not hurt him and that he will drink with him. After having the fault of stripping Cassio of his good reputation, Iago says, “Our general’s wife is now the general. I may say so in this respect, for that he hath devoted and given up himself to the contemplation, mark, and denotement of her parts and graces - confess yourself freely to her, importune her help to put you in your place again,” (II, III, line 250-255) which means that, if Cassio gets Desdemona to be his friend, she can convince Othello to give his job
