For my Mythology project I am focusing on Demeter. Going through all of the sources that I have found, I have noticed that there are a lot of difference and similarities that occur between a few of my sources. The two sources that I am going to focus on is are the Hymn to Demeter and the Hymn to Cere. While some differences between the Hymn to Demeter and the Hymn to Ceres are evident, the similarities are salient. These similarities and differences are not hard to notice, they are quite easy. Some may wonder if these are actually similarities and differences and not just a different story with totally new characters and the similar story line.
In the Hymn to Demeter and the Hymn to Ceres there are many similarities. One would say they…show more content… This is true. The two hymns are the same exact story. They are both telling the story of how Persephone was kidnapped by her uncle Hades. It also tells that her father Zeus was the one who set us this arranged marriage between the two, the one thing that Zeus forgot to do was to tell Persephone and Demeter about this. So when Persephone was taken by her uncle to get married to him, it was all done against her free will. Both of these stories start off the same that Persephone was in the forest picking flowers with her friends when she saw a path of beautifully marvellous flowers that were just in that one area. When she went to pick those flowers was the moment she was snatched by her uncle, not knowing what was going on, she called out for someone to help her. As both stories go on they have the same…show more content… I will talk about a few of the major differences that are seen throughout both stories. The very first difference that appears between both of the stories is that the names in both stories are different. In the Hymn to Demeter the characters names are Demeter, Persephone, Zeus, and Aidoneus/Hades; whereas, in the Hymn to Cere the names are Cere(Demeter), Proserpina(Persephone), Jove(Zeus), and Pluto(Hades/Aidoneus). The second difference that is noticed is that in the Hymn to Cere the muses ask if we want to hear a song sung about Ceres. The song goes on saying that “Ceres was the first to turn Soil with a plow, First to give grain and kindly nourish the world” (Ovid 396-397). In the Hymn to Cere, as the story goes on a little bit more it turns out that Venus sent her son Cupid down to shoot Pluto with an arrow, so that he falls in love with Proserpina, then goes into Proserpina in the forest with her friends picking flowers. This is not present in the Hymn to Demeter. The hymn to Demeter starts off with a small description of Demeter and then moves on to the scene where Persephone is picking flowers and is kidnapped. Then when Demeter finds out about her daughter and that she was kidnapped, she went looking everywhere for her. Demeter came across Hekate, who told Demeter that she heard Persephone screaming for her father. Thus Hekate lead Demeter to
