The author, Hwang Sun-won, includes this passage from his short story “Cranes” in order to show that freedom is not impossible. In the second paragraph Song-sam sees a "group of cranes that looked like men in white clothes bending over".This reminded him of when he and Tok-chae were younger and they captured a crane, detaining it from escaping by tying it up. Then they proceeded to pat it on the head like a pet and ride on his back daily. Unknowingly they are actually hurting the crane keeping it from joining his kind.
