How The Murray Darling River Basin Affect Australia's Food Security

The Murray Darling River Basin is extremely important to Australia's food security because it produces one third of Australia's food supply. About three quarters of Australia's irrigated crops are grown in the Basin. The agricultural processes and harvests occurring in within The Murray Darling River Basin is majority of Australia's food supply, which has been grown in that area. Goods that are grown there are: sheep, cattle, dairy produce, rice, wine, oil-seed, fruit and vegetables. The Murray Darling River Basin is very important to Australia's because without it we wouldn't have pure, fresh, organic, and home grown foods. Also without Australia's food bowl we won't know how the imported foods we are getting were grown and whether the foods we are consuming has been handled and grown safely or not.…show more content… But there are only three main impacts. The three main environmental impacts are salinity, population growth and blue- green algal blooms; those impacts play a big part in affecting the Basin's health in the long run. A very good example of current environmental degradation in the area include the population growth because it will expand arable land which leads to a decrease of yields which turns in to a very high demand for food because there will be more people wanting more food which can also lead to threats in food security; food security could then turn into food insecurity. Another example of environmental degradation is salinity because if it salinity levels are high enough they can increase the crop yields which will eventually effect the vegetation and the aquatic ecosystem (aquaculture) which can then damage the infrastructure. The last example of environmental degradation is blue- green algal blooms because if they interfere with other uses of water they can instantly affect the health of all human
