Our Day Out
In the play ‘Our Day Out’ by the author Willy Russell, he creates contrast between two exact opposite teachers, and shows how it affects the children by the way they teach and act towards them. At the start of the play Russell writes about how Mrs Kay, who is laid back, kind and loving compared to Mr Briggs who is very strict, aggressive and doesn’t care what others think. In this essay I shall show how the author makes us aware of the big contrast between them and the point he is putting across.
First off, I shall demonstrate how Russell uses Stage Directions to create variance between Mr Briggs and Mrs Kay. For example, we understand through Stage Directions that Mrs Kay “brightly” (P.3) says hello to Mr Briggs first thing in the morning. This suggests that she is cheerful and upbeat even…show more content… Whereas Mr Briggs responds “begrudgingly” (P.3) with a stern, strict look on his face. He says this back to Mrs Kay when she kindly greets him in the morning. This suggests either that he is very grumpy and unhappy as a person or even just in the morning or he just simply doesn’t want to speak to her. For another example “Mrs Kay is paddling, dress held above her knees” (P.39). This is back at The Beach where Mrs Kay decides to join in with the kids and have a little fun. This suggests that she is still a kid at heart, or just wants the kids to have fun so she joins in. This example is compared to “Briggs sits on a rock apart from the main group” (P.39) Mr Briggs isn’t joining in because he doesn’t want the kids having fun so why would he encourage it. This suggests that he is grumpy and doesn’t want the children having fun, so he just sits and sulks because he isn’t getting his way. For a final example on Stage Directions it is quite like the second one where “Mrs Kay is in goals” (P.44) it shows her having fun, an once
