The 16th century Roman Catholic Church was very corrupted and abused the power it held in order to further in monetary gain. Martin Luther reached his breaking point, if you will, with the selling of indulgences. Luther found out that profits of these indulgences where making their way into the Popes pocket. The sale of indulgences began to change the way people were looking at sins. Why should I go to a priest and confess when I just pay “per sin?” This lead to his nailing of the 95 Theses to church wall on October 31. As more and more people were turning to buying indulgences to escape sins and buy their way into gods’ good grace, the more Luther studied.
