The definition of citizenship back in the early years of America’s start was everyone's treated equally and everyone has the right to do everything in the Constitution at that time. Though that wasn’t true because slaves were still working for the whites and could not do any rights in the Constitution. So about 80 to about 90 years later when the Civil War started, Lincoln wanted to change the definition for citizenship. During the Civil War Many white southerners were not wanting to change the black’s rights to be “free.”
