Hoffer’s “Fact-checking” is a representational 16”X 30” oils on wood painting. It is displayed in the Kellenberg wing of Molloy College as part of the Alumni exhibition of 2015. Fact-Checking depicts a young man and an older gentlemen starting at a laptop in their living room. The title suggests that the men are surfing the internet to check facts or validate information. Artists make art for countless reasons. They make art to express their emotions, capture the beauty of their environment, as well as to document historical aspects of the era in which they live. The painting depicts a father and son sitting on a couch in their living room surfing the internet, along with many other objects. Some of the objects include a lamb placed on an end table surrounded by different books. Numerous glass windows are seen in the background. The windows are painted blue with blurry white streaks. The faded blue and shadowy distorted white streaks on the windows flawlessly represent the reflection of the sky on a cloudy day. Artists usually use composition to wean viewers’ eyes to the focal point of a work of art. Typically the focal point is placed in the center, however, in Fact-checking; Hoffer places the focal point to the far right of the painting and weans viewers’ eyes in the direction of the focal point. Artists can use several methods to point viewers to the focal point of a work of art when it is not placed in the center. Some of the most common methods include the formation of an imaginary line that point to the focal point. The formation of an imaginary line can be done by arranging other objects in the painting in a line that lead to the focal point. Other methods include the depiction of other figures in the painting that are looking at the focal point. By displaying other figures looking at the focal point, viewers are weaned to the focal point because it is thought to be human nature to follow the crowd.
