Ann Richards said it best, “Now we Democrats believe that America is still the country of fair play, that we can come out of a small town or a poor neighborhood and have the same chance as anyone else, and it doesn't matter whether we are black or Hispanic, or disabled or women” (Richards). If Hispanic students were cognizant of the resources available to them, there would be a staggering increase in college enrollment numbers. There is a need for Hispanic professors, doctors, lawyers, scientists, etc.; a college education is the perfect path for them to begin their journey on. Certain universities must meet a Hispanic enrollment quota consequently benefiting Hispanic students. Hispanics should not allow their stereotypical reputation as laborers…show more content…
Hispanics everywhere must challenge this ideal. Young Hispanics should not limit themselves to only manual labor. They must step out of their comfort zone just like their ancestors did when they migrated to the United States for a shot at a better quality of life. One young man comes to mind when I think of successful Hispanic students: Ray Aguilar. Ray came from a poor family of seven who lived in a three-bedroom duplex. He was faced with either the option of quitting school to work in the harvest fields with his parents, or continuing his education. Ray chose to continue his education and went on to become Vice President of Internal affairs for the Unified Greek council at the University of South Florida. In addition to this, he helped start The Mexican American Student Association, was appointed President of MASA, inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in 2001, and chosen as the University of South Florida’s Male Leader of the Year 2002
